What We Do

1. Special School for Intellectually Challenged

We are currently operating a special school for intellectually challenged children, serving 25 students with intellectual disabilities between the ages of 5 and 17 years. The students are enrolled across four levels: Pre-Primary, Primary, Secondary, and Pre-Vocational.

The school follows a structured curriculum in accordance with the guidelines set by the Government, and is staffed by specially trained teachers and vocational instructors dedicated to meeting each child’s individual needs.

Classroom and Therapeutic Activities Include:

  •  Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
  • Basic Concepts and Understanding
  • Functional and Academic Skills
  • Speech Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Behavioral Modification
  • Yoga and Mindfulness
  • Music and Dance Therapy

This holistic approach aims not only to educate but also to empower each child to lead a more independent and fulfilling life.

The Special School wing consists of two classrooms, staffed by two special education teachers and one physiotherapist. The focus is on teaching daily living skills and basic educational concepts through interactive, hands-on methods tailored to each child’s mental ability and learning capacity.

Instruction is provided using toys, models, charts, and other visual aids to enhance understanding. Children are engaged in practical and demonstration-based learning that includes: Bathing and personal hygiene, Brushing teeth, Toilet use and cleanliness, Washing clothes, Basic cooking and tea preparation, Participating in prayer.

Every year, the school organizes a Sports and Cultural Meet exclusively for children with intellectual disabilities. The event includes a variety of games and competitions designed to promote participation, physical coordination, and self-confidence including Running Race, Eating Race, Lemon & Spoon Race, Frog Race, Collecting Stones, Musical Chairs. The cultural and creative competitions include Writing, Drawing, Singing, Dancing, and Elocution.

All children are encouraged to participate in every event of their choice. Each child receives a prize for participation and performance, which fosters motivation, self-esteem, and a spirit of inclusion. These activities are not only fun but also crucial for their physical development and personal growth.

In addition to classroom instruction, the school provides training for parents to help them support their child’s development at home. Parents are advised on how to encourage independent daily living activities and are guided in continuing the learning process beyond the school environment.

2. Vocational Training

Special education for children with disabilities is truly meaningful only when it equips them to lead independent and self-sufficient lives. We therefore provide vocational training, aimed at empowering students to earn their livelihood and achieve economic independence, in various practical and marketable skills, including Envelope and cover making, Threading and making jewelry and Paper bag production.

Through these programs, we aim to instill confidence and a sense of purpose in each student.

3. Speech Therapy

One of the greatest challenges faced by students with intellectual disabilities is a lack of speech and communication skills. To address this, our school provides regular speech development therapy conducted by trained experts, using specialized speech equipment. This helps the children gradually develop the ability to speak and express their feelings, with a significant improvement in their ability to communicate. Over time, many of our students make remarkable progress, enabling them to interact more effectively with others, both within the school and outside.

4. Physiotherapy

Our children, especially those with Multiple Disabilities receive regular physiotherapy sessions to induce and improve mobility, strengthen and stimulate their limbs enabling them to move from place to place, initially with the support of a trained therapist, and eventually on their own. This therapy also encourages them to undertake small tasks in their vocational training classes while tuning and stimulating their brain to send appropriate signals to the body, supporting the children in carrying out purposeful movements and everyday tasks, also toning up their muscles and promoting neuromuscular coordination.

5. Games & Sports Therapy

All children are motivated to participate in a variety of games and sports activities designed to stimulate and activate brain function and development, promote interaction with other children, which ultimately encourages them to observe and imitate the actions of other children, an important step in cognitive and behavioral development and building confidence and team work.

6. Parent Training Program

The organization offers free individual or group counseling services by trained professionals to the families of students with Intellectual disabilities, related to care, management, and overall well-being of the child, designed to address the specific needs of each family.

7. Home Based Training (Special Education on Wheels)

According to a recent survey, there are 20 students with severe intellectual disabilities living in and around Kotagiri. To support these children, we have launched a Home-Based Training Programme aimed at providing support and guidance to the caregiver and focused on developing essential life skills for the children. The services offered under this program include: Activities of Daily Living, Mobility and Basic communication skills development, Parents and Guardians Awareness sessions, Physiotherapy and other therapeutic services, Educational support and placement guidance after training and Periodic academic and developmental assessments to track progress.
